AmeriCorps Financial Educator [United States]

Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada (CCNN) addresses the root causes of poverty by encountering and accompanying those living in poverty on a journey to economic equality and realizing a meaningful and purposeful life. Under our Thriving Families Support Center (Thrive), the Elevating Families program uses an evidence-based economic mobility pathway approach to help low-income families become self-sufficient through mobility mentoring and wraparound support. Eligible families will complete two self-defined sustainability milestones during their transformative yearlong commitment. An AmeriCorps Financial Educator is essential to match the pace of this programming that responds to the needs of low-income families seeking a sustainable economic pathway. Each family must take a CCNN-hosted financial literacy class as part of their goal action plans. The AmeriCorps Financial Educator will teach FDIC Money Smart for Adults to help Elevating Families participants gain practical knowledge and resources to manage their finances with confidence. The AmeriCorps Financial Educator would also teach staff as appropriate so that this offering becomes part of our wraparound services. Our current curriculum only applies to a narrow client base, and Elevating Families needs a more robust class offering. Under Thrive, the Financial Educator will enhance our current financial literacy service using the FDIC Money Smart to help Elevating Families participants exceed one of their goals. Thrive also provides personalized wraparound support to families and seniors. Financial literacy services are essential for this population; many are on fixed incomes and struggling to navigate the rising housing costs, food, utilities, and more. CCNN plans to apply for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) grant this year. The AmeriCorps Financial Educator will support volunteer recruitment and planning for the VITA/TCE programming.
