STATLER COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND MINERAL RESOURCES DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING The Department of Chemic! al Engineering in the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University invites applications for a post-doctoral fellow to support Dr. Debangsu Bhattacharyya’s research program on development of first-principles steady-state and dynamic models of traditional and high-viscosity solvent systems for CO2 capture and use of these models for studies such as optimization, uncertainty quantification, and process control.

The post-combustion capture and compression system will generate a sequestration-ready CO2 stream using the flue gas from a baseline supercritical pulverized coal plant. The successful candidate will play a key role in the Process Modeling Team for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative (CCSITM) for accelerated advancement of potential carbon capture technologies. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with CCSI researchers at the DOE’s National Energy Technolog! y Laboratory (NETL) and several other national laboratories an! d universities.

The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline when the appointment begins. In addition, the successful candidate must possess some of the following qualifications: * Demonstrated sound knowledge of using commercial steady-state and dynamic process modeling software such as Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics, etc. * Understanding of the thermodynamic and transport models and kinetics of key unit operations that are the building blocks of solvent-based CO2 capture processes.

  • Understanding of the rate-based models for electrolyte systems. * Development of partial differential equation (PDE)-based process model of representative energy systems or energy conversion devices considering the physics of the system by using commercial software such as Aspen Custom Modeler, gPROMS, Matlab, etc. * Ability to guide and mentor graduate students and collaborate effectively with co-investigators. * Ability! to communicate effectively both orally and in writing as demonstrated, for example, by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at technical meetings.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prepare, present, and report results effectively. Applicants must provide evidence of eligibility to work in the U.S. and ability to obtain necessary security clearances to work at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) when the appointment begins.
