DESCRIPTION

This is work performing in all community, public health and social service specialist occupations not listed separately.

Some positions in this occupation may be responsible for coordinating work and supervising employees.

It is the policy of the Florida Department! of Children and Families that any applicant being considered ! for employment must successfully complete a State and National criminal history check as a condition of employment before beginning employment, and, if applicable, also be screened in accordance with the requirements of Chapter 435, F.S., and Chapter 408, F.S. No applicant may begin employment until the background screening results are received, reviewed for any disqualifying offenses, and approved by the Agency. Background screening shall include, but not be limited to, fingerprinting for State and Federal criminal records checks through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and may include local criminal history checks through local law enforcement agencies.

The Child Protective Investigator (CPI) is an individual employed by the department who investigates allegations of child maltreatment.

Allocation factors:
This is professional work protecting children, working with families and conducti! ng investigations of alleged abused, abandoned, neglected or exploited children, in the Department of Children and Families. The employee(s) allocated to position(s) in this class may have collateral duties such as contract management and maximization of Federal funds.

Examples of Work Performed:
¨ Makes contacts with families with allegations of abuse, neglect and/or maltreatment

¨ Responds to allegations of abuse, neglect, abandonment and/or special conditions; determine findings; and enters information into FSFN, and other systems.

¨ Responds to Hotline reports and determines immediate risk to child

¨ Conduct child safety assessments

¨ Opens, maintains and closes files related to families being served

¨ Arranges for or provides transportation for clients

¨ Schedules and gathers information for and participates in case staffing

¨ Explains child protection to children and families
¨ Explains rights and responsibilities to children and family m! embers

¨ Reports indication of abuse, neglect and/or abandonment to Florida Abuse Hotline

¨ Arranges for emergency placement for children at risk

¨ Performs related work as required

¨ Knowledge of professional ethics relating to child protection and counseling

¨ Knowledge of family-centered interviewing and counseling techniques

¨ Knowledge of investigative techniqu! es

¨ Skill in considering child development in guiding placement of children

¨ Ability to conduct risk and safety investigations

¨ Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments

¨ Ability to understand and apply relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures

¨ Ability to maintain well-executed case files

Minimum Qualifications:
¨ Current valid driver's license

¨ A Bach! elor’s degree in any field from an accredited college or university

¨ 1 year of child welfare related experience o Examples of child welfare related experience include: work in a community based agency, social service, child care or day care, child welfare agency, law enforcement working with child safety, school teacher or counselor, and others as deemed appropriate

¨ Master’s degree in related service field can substitute for one year of experience

¨ Child Protection Internship can substitute for one year of experience

Note: Upon completion of training, a passing score on the basic skills Introduction to Child Protection Written Assessment must be attained.
