AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program dedicated to ending poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations and public agencies. VISTA’s mission is to strengthen and supplement efforts in low-income communities to eliminate and alleviate poverty by engaging volunteers from all walks of life, all geographical areas, and all age groups in a year of full-time service.
By joining Volunteer Corps at L.A. Works, you will be placed with one of our nonprofit partner organizations to serve for 12 months and tasked with a capacity-building project such as: creating sustainable systems to expand services, recruiting community members to volunteer in local programs, establishing a database of program alumni, and/or developing partnerships to bring new economic opportunities in LA county.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Pass a national service criminal history check
  • Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident Aliens and persons residing in a state that have the following legal residency classifications: refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status, or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status

TITLE: VISTA Disaster Ready Associate

REPORTS TO: Disaster Ready Coordinator

SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Coordinator, spearhead efforts to provide Disaster Ready resources to targeted vulnerable populations through volunteer mobilization.

HOURS: Monday - Friday, 9am - 5:30 pm; some weekends for events, meetings, etc.

We work on a hybrid model: primarily remote with one to two days per week in-person for meetings or events. L.A. Works’ office is located in Cypress Park, but outreach events occur throughout Los Angeles County (mileage reimbursement provided).

Each VISTA will:

  • Work directly with community based organizations to provide targeted Disaster Ready information sessions and resources that suit the needs of their community;
  • Assist with community-based volunteer recruitment by designing recruitment material and volunteer roles for disaster preparedness campaigns;
  • Establish systems to recruit and supervise volunteers for bi-monthly signature projects to provide door-to-door, peer-to-peer campaigns to distribute disaster readiness material;
  • Develop a written, customized Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) that includes services they will provide in the case of disaster, how they will engage volunteers if said disaster hits, and how the information will be disseminated;
  • Manage the Disaster Readiness web-page with updated volunteer opportunities as well disaster ready resources;
  • Create new streams of volunteer recruitment through partnership building with colleges, high schools, and community groups;
  • Attend in person L.A. Works’ Days of Service including, MLK Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Earth Day, and 9/11; and,
  • Access to reliable transportation 1-2 days per week (many of our host sites are difficult to get to via public transportation, so a vehicle is preferred).

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $2,054.00 per month
